This course explores today’s Ukrainian society from political, cultural, and identity perspectives, set against a clear historical background. You’ll learn how Ukrainian culture and identity developed in the borderlands of the Russian, Habsburg, and Ottoman empires. The course pays special attention to state and nation-building in post-Soviet Ukraine since 1991 and examines the regional context. A key focus is understanding the factors that led to Russia’s war against Ukraine.

This is an online distance-learning course. You will study through a digital platform with the help of online tools, so you need a computer with internet access. The teaching is based on recorded lectures that are released gradually during the course. Each lecture is linked to the required readings and focuses on specific themes and issues.

Selection criteria

Seats are allocated according to the following: The general average (GPA) of your higher secondary school leaving certificate: 34 %, The Swedish national university aptitude test: 34 %, number of previous ECTS at application deadline (up to 165): 32 %. If students have equal credentials, seats are allocated based on their results on The Swedish National University Aptitude Test. If this too is equal, seats are allocated based on a draw.
