The course provides an in-depth study of modern macroeconomics with a focus on New Keynesian models and their microeconomic foundations. You learn how these models are derived and how they can be extended to include heterogeneity among households and firms. You get to understand how the models can be applied to analyse real economies. We also introduce alternative approaches and discusse their respective strengths and weaknesses.

Economic policy is analysed through the lens of these models, connecting theory to real-world events. We study historical and contemporary examples of economic crises, recovery phases and periods of policy reform. Thereby, you learn to evaluate how fiscal and monetary policies interact and evolve. We also explore how ongoing structural changes such as digitalisation influence economic behaviour and the design of policy.

Through exercises and applied tasks, you analyse typical macroeconomic situations using both short- and long-term perspectives. The course develops the ability to understand, apply and critically assess macroeconomic models, preparing students for advanced policy analysis and research.

Course syllabus

The syllabus contains the formal and legal details of the entire course. It’s a legal document outlining the course structure and requirements, intended mainly for administrative use.

Teaching combines lectures, seminars and practical exercises designed to strengthen both your theoretical understanding and your analytical skills. The lectures provide you with the theoretical framework and mathematical foundations of modern macroeconomic models, while the seminars focus on interpretation, discussion and application to empirical cases.

You work actively with problem-solving tasks and short analytical assignments that illustrate how macroeconomic models can be used to understand policy trade-offs and real-world dynamics. Assessment consists of a written exam and an individual project report where you apply models to analyse a chosen macroeconomic situation or policy challenge. The course places strong emphasis on your ability to use theory critically, to reason systematically and to communicate complex ideas clearly.
