This course focuses on understanding and applying linear regression models to analyse economic data. You will start by revisiting key concepts from probability and statistics to ensure a solid foundation. The core of the course is learning how to model relationships between variables, test ideas using data, and interpret results. You will study models for single-variable and multi-variable settings including how to handle qualitative data.
The course covers different types of data: cross-sectional, time-series, and panel data, and shows how to account for specific features in each case. Throughout, you will work with real datasets to practice analysis, evaluate model assumptions, and learn strategies for when assumptions are not fully met. We use basic statistics and probability to understand how models are estimated and evaluated.
By the end of the course, you will be able to apply the empirical tools you encounter in the course to answer economic questions and to communicate your findings effectively.
Course literature
The course literature listed may be updated up to eight weeks before the course begins.
Course literature NEKG31 (PDF, New tab)The course is taught through lectures, tutorials, problem sessions, quizzes, and a group project. Lectures introduce linear models and techniques for analysing cross-sectional, time-series, and panel data. Tutorials and problem sessions allow you to apply methods to real datasets, solve exercises, and discuss solutions with teaching assistants. Quizzes and problem sessions provide opportunities to test understanding and earn points towards the final grade. The group project offers hands-on experience in analysing a dataset using the techniques learned in class.
The main examination is a written test that assesses conceptual understanding and practical problem-solving. Points from quizzes, problem sessions, and the group project are added to the final grade once the written exam is passed.
