This master’s level course in economics focuses on how to assess the societal value of projects, programmes and policy changes, especially those involving environmental issues. You will learn how to apply welfare economic theory to situations where markets are missing or incomplete, and how to value non-market goods such as clean air, biodiversity and public health.
Using a variety of evaluation tools, you will be able to calculate social costs and benefits, handle risk and uncertainty, and express results in terms of social net present values. The course draws on real-world examples from environmental, transport and health economics, while also exploring broader international sustainability challenges.
You will develop the ability to apply a societal perspective to economic problems, choose appropriate evaluation methods and communicate your findings effectively to decision-makers. This course is ideal if you are interested in public economics, policy evaluation, and sustainable development.
