Economics: International Macroeconomic Theory

In this course, you will learn what drives individual saving decisions and how these choices influence aggregate current account dynamics. To do this, you will work with theoretic, micro-founded dynamic stochastic general equilibrium models of open economies.

You will encounter and learn to understand state-of-the-art papers in micro-founded macroeconomic theory with a focus on questions of open economies and heterogeneity. You will learn to analyse the drivers of individual savings, current accounts and interest rates in dynamic stochastic general equilibrium models.

We will place a particular focus on the role of inequalities resulting from the life cycle (Overlapping Generations Models) and from uninsured labour risk (Heterogeneous Agent Models). 

The main form of teaching is lectures. You will also read, summarise and present in class a state-of-the-art paper in macroeconomic theory.

Examination consists of a final written exam and the summary and presentation of the macroeconomic paper.

Prerequisites

Students who have been admitted to the Master Programme in Economics and have taken the course NEKN41 “Advanced Macroeconomic Analysis” are eligible to take this course. For other students at least 90 ECTS-credits in economics are required. These must include 30 ECTS-credits at the advanced level, including NEKN41 "Advanced Macroeconomics” or its equivalent.
