You get a rigorous understanding of how individuals make economic decisions. We cover the foundations of microeconomic theory, including preferences, utility and choice; how consumers and producers respond to prices and constraints; and how choices are made under uncertainty. You will learn how to model individual behaviour, how to derive and interpret demand and supply, and how markets allocate resources. A particular emphasis is placed on formal reasoning and mathematical proofs, which helps you build transferable skills in abstraction and problem solving.
The course is relevant for you if you wish to deepen your knowledge of economics, as it forms the theoretical backbone for many applied and empirical topics. It is particularly valuable if you are interested in further studies in economics or related fields.
Course syllabus
The syllabus contains the formal and legal details of the entire course. It’s a legal document outlining the course structure and requirements, intended mainly for administrative use.
Syllabus (PDF, new tab)Course literature
The course literature listed may be updated up to eight weeks before the course begins.
Course literature NEKP21 (PDF, New tab)Teaching is based on lectures and problem-based sessions. The lectures introduce the theoretical tools and main results, while the problem sessions focus on exercises designed to deepen your understanding and develop your ability to work with formal economic models. You are expected to engage actively with the material and work independently with the course problems.
Grades are based on a final written exam that tests your ability to apply the models and concepts covered in the course. To support your learning, we distribute problem sets during the course and discuss them in class. The problem sets are not graded, though. The final grade is based entirely on the exam.
