This course introduces you to the dynamic relationship between business and society. You’ll learn why businesses exist, how they evolve and how they influence – and are influenced by – social, legal and political contexts.
Through historical examples from Europe and the U.S., you’ll explore how commerce has developed from antiquity to the present. You’ll study alternative theories of economic growth and business organisation, and examine how different environments shape business structures.
The course highlights how business is not a fixed or neutral force, but a product of its time and place. You’ll gain insight into how institutions and regulations affect business, and how business in turn contributes to shaping society.
The course is taught in English and is part of the third term of the BSc programme Economy and Society. It is open to students who have completed at least 45 credits within the programme.
