Air pollution is a major challenge for both people and the environment. It affects the climate in different ways – sometimes warming, sometimes cooling – which makes predicting climate change difficult. At the same time, it causes diseases that lead to seven million deaths globally each year.

As we move towards a greener economy, some sources of pollution will disappear, but new ones may emerge. To understand and solve these problems, knowledge from several areas is needed. In this course, you will learn how researchers measure air pollution and its spread, how they link pollution to health, and how they study toxicity. You will also see how these results are used to create laws and policies that protect people and the environment.

The course can be taken as a stand-alone option and is ideal for anyone interested in climate, health and sustainable development. The language of instruction is English.

Your studies include lectures, seminars and projects where you work with real examples. We look at how technology is used to measure emissions, how medical research shows the effects on health, and how this knowledge can lead to better decisions in society.

Selection criteria

Priority is given to applicants who have applied before deadline and are registered to a course or a programme at Lunds University the semester before this course starts. After that seats are allocated according to the following: The general average (GPA) of your higher secondary school leaving certificate: 34 %, The Swedish national university aptitude test: 34 %, number of previous ECTS at application deadline (up to 165): 32 %. If students have equal credentials, seats are allocated based on their results on The Swedish National University Aptitude Test. If this too is equal, seats are allocated based on a draw.
