The distance learning course comprises 15 ECTS credits. The course is full-time (100% study pace) and runs for 10 weeks during the summer.

Environmental Justice is an advanced-level law course for those who want to participate in a critical and multifaceted discussion on environmental justice. The course provides an understanding of the historical development of environmental justice. You will gain insight into the relevant policies and conventions that characterise this area of law, as well as perspectives from various actors. In addition, you will gain an understanding of why, when and where the development of environmental justice began.

What does justice mean in a world where power often trumps principles? This course addresses issues of justice in different societies and contexts, as well as how environmental degradation and climate crises are affected by our view of justice. It also deals with issues concerning the rights of both current and future generations to natural resources. Take this course to understand the legal and political tools available to enable environmental justice.

The course is delivered entirely online via the Canvas learning platform and is designed to be flexible and easily accessible. You will watch professionally recorded video lectures on environmental justice, which you can view at your convenience. At the same time, you will read course literature and legal texts, which will give you a solid foundation to build on.

To support your learning, there are self-correcting tests with multiple-choice questions that you can take several times. These are not part of the examination, but they help you to review and understand the content.

Examinations

Your performance will be assessed through four reflective assignments, each worth one (1) ECTS credit, and a final assignment worth eleven (11) ECTS credits. The final grade is based on a combination of your results on the four reflective assignments and your results on the final written assignment.

Early termination

If you do not wish to complete the course, you have the option of withdrawing early within three weeks of the course starts. Early withdrawal allows you to reapply for the course. Later withdrawals are final, and you cannot reapply for the course. You can either withdraw early via student.ladok.se or by sending an email to environmentaljustice [at] jur [dot] lu [dot] se.
