The course provides a solid foundation in linguistic research. You will learn how to study language scientifically, both in theory and practice. You’ll also get an introduction to psycholinguistics – an exciting field that explores how language functions in the brain.

The course consists of three parts

  • Linguistic Research Methods (7.5 credits) – Learn how linguists work and try out different methods yourself.
  • Psycholinguistics (7.5 credits) – Gain insight into how we perceive, produce, and process language.
  • Thesis Project (15 credits) – Conduct your own research project in linguistics and present it in a thesis.

The teaching is varied and engaging. You will take part in:

  • lectures that provide theoretical foundations
  • seminars for discussion and deeper understanding
  • labs where you test methods in practice
  • group work and individual assignments
  • supervision for your thesis project
  • a study visit to a psycholinguistic research environment.

Some components, such as the seminars and labs, are mandatory. If you miss one, you’ll need to complete a written assignment instead.

The assessment is based on oral and written assignments, lab reports, a review article, and your thesis. You’ll also practice giving and receiving constructive feedback by reviewing another student’s thesis.

After the course, you will have a strong knowledge in linguistic theory and methods. You will be able to:

  • conduct your own linguistic research
  • discuss and analyse language from a scientific perspective
  • write and present academic texts
  • work independently and manage your time effectively.

The course prepares you for further studies in linguistics. It also provides a solid foundation if you want to work with language, communication, education, or research.

Additionally, you’ll gain skills in critical thinking, information retrieval, and following research ethics guidelines – valuable in many professions.
