This course offers a broad introduction to geoscientific methods with a focus on data analysis, geochemistry, and geological dating. You will learn how to collect and process data, interpret geological processes, and work with real-world case studies. The course is ideal for those curious about Earth’s development and who want to combine theory with hands-on experience.
Course content
- Sampling and data management
- Basic statistics
- Excel and programming (for example Matlab)
- Geochemical systems
- Geological dating (geochronology)
- Laboratory and computer-based exercises
- Project work with case studies
- Field excursion and seminar presentation.
The course is divided into three parts:
Part 1: You will learn the basics of sampling, data management, and statistics. The work begins in Excel and then moves into a programming tool, such as Matlab.
Part 2: You will be introduced to geochemical systems and methods for determining the age of rocks. This part includes both computer-based exercises and laboratory work to deepen your understanding.
Part 3: You will carry out a project based on a real case study. The project begins with a field excursion where you collect your own samples. Throughout the course, you will analyze these samples and present your results in a final seminar.
You will work both independently and in groups, supported by lectures, exercises, and supervision.
Prerequisites
To be admitted to the course, students must have 90 credits in geology, including knowledge equivalent to GEOB21, GEOB24, GEOB25, GEOB32-GEOB33 or GEOB01-GEOB04. Proficiency in English corresponding to English B/English 6 from Swedish upper secondary school.
