This course provides you with fundamental knowledge in GIS (Geographic Information Systems), cartography, and geodesy. You will learn how to process and analyze geographic data, both theoretically and practically. The course offers a broad understanding of how geographic data can be used to solve environmental and societal challenges, both in Sweden and internationally. You will also learn about cartography, including map projections and reference systems, as well as how to present geographic data clearly and effectively.

The GIS components include basic cartography, such as projections and reference systems, and working with geographic data in digital forms like maps, images, and tables. You will also learn basic analysis of geographic data in vector format and how to create cartographic and graphical presentations of digital maps.

This online course is designed for flexible learning, allowing you to study at your own pace without time-synchronous components. You can choose to complete the course at either a full-time (100%) or part-time (50%) study rate. The course is divided into thematic modules that cover the learning objectives. Theoretical sections include recorded video lectures and textual materials available on a digital learning platform. Each section has mandatory theoretical and practical assignments to demonstrate your understanding and develop your skills.

Prerequisites

General requirements and studies equivalent of course English 6 from Swedish Upper Secondary School.

Selection criteria

Seats are allocated according to the following: The general average (GPA) of your higher secondary school leaving certificate: 34 %, The Swedish national university aptitude test: 34 %, number of previous ECTS at application deadline (up to 165): 32 %. If students have equal credentials, seats are allocated based on their results on The Swedish National University Aptitude Test. If this too is equal, seats are allocated based on a draw.
