The course provides you with a fundamental introduction to biomaterials and their biomedical use. You will learn about their advantages and limitations. We will explain and discuss important definitions and concepts.
During the course, we will also talk about treatments such as sterilisation, surface modifications, drug delivery, and tissue engineering. After the course, you will understand how these techniques have improved people's lives.
The course is offered as a standalone introductory course in chemistry.
The teaching includes lectures and a project. Participation in the project, along with associated components, is mandatory. Assessment is conducted through a written project report and an oral project presentation at the end of the course, as well as the completion of mandatory components.
Lectures
The lectures provide you with in-depth knowledge of biomaterials, their properties, and their crucial role in biomedical applications.
- You will learn about different materials used in biomedical applications, such as metals, polymers, inorganic and natural materials, for example, collagen.
- We cover various techniques to analyse and characterise these materials.
- You will gain a fundamental understanding of drug delivery.
- We discuss the basics of tissue engineering.
- You will receive an overview of what basic biomaterials are.
