The teaching combines lectures with seminars and group exercises, giving you the opportunity to engage actively with the material together with your peers. You will participate in discussions, analyse historical and political developments, and work on problem-based tasks. Attendance at two seminars and two group exercises is mandatory, ensuring that you gain hands-on experience in applying theoretical knowledge.

The course is structured around key events, themes, and case studies, which provide both a broad overview and in-depth insights into the region’s history. The assessment is carried out through a take-home exam, allowing you to demonstrate your ability to synthesize information, critically evaluate sources, and present well-structured arguments. To succeed, you should have strong written and spoken English skills, as parts of the course material and discussions are in English.

For those planning further studies, this course is an excellent foundation for advanced programs in history, political science, Middle Eastern studies, or global studies.

The course also provides valuable knowledge for careers that require an understanding of the Middle East and North Africa. The skills you gain are relevant for roles in international relations, journalism, diplomacy, development work, research, and organizations operating in or with the region.

Your ability to analyse complex political and social processes will be an asset in professions that demand global awareness and intercultural competence.
