Japanese: Advanced Course - Reading Comprehension and Oral Presentation

This course offers a unique opportunity to deepen your understanding of the Japanese language by reading and discussing academic texts – in Japanese. You will not only learn more about the language itself but also about how it is studied in research. The course also includes various written and oral exercises to help you refine your language skills. It is suitable for students who already have a solid foundation in Japanese and want to take the next step, whether you are enrolled in the Master’s Programme in Languages and Linguistics or taking the course independently.

The syllabus contains the formal and legal details of the entire course. It’s a legal document outlining the course structure and requirements, intended mainly for administrative use.

Course literature

The course literature listed may be updated up to eight weeks before the course begins.

The course consists of approximately 10 lectures and 10 group assignments. During the lectures, you will read and discuss academic texts in Japanese. The focus is on understanding the content, building vocabulary, and becoming familiar with research methods.

In the group assignments, you will discuss and summarize the content of lectures held in Japanese. You will also practice reading aloud to improve your pronunciation and intonation – that is, how the language sounds when spoken naturally.

You will also complete 5–7 mandatory written assignments where you demonstrate what you have learned.

By the end of the course, you will be able to:

• read and understand short academic texts in Japanese  independently
• reflect on the Japanese language and how it is studied
• identify and manage common pronunciation challenges, especially intonation
• deliver oral presentations of academic texts
• critically assess scientific claims about the Japanese language.

This course provides a strong foundation for further studies in Japanese or linguistics and can also be valuable if you aim to work with languages, translation, or international relations.

Entry requirements

To be admitted to the course, students must have passed 120 credits in Japanese or the equivalent.
