Linguistics: Language Acquisition and Processing

This course focuses on how we use and learn languages, when we speak, write, and gesture. You will learn about how we understand and produce language, and how these processes work in the brain. The course covers everything from how young children learn their first language to how older children and adults learn new languages.

The course is also part of the introductory course in linguistics, LINA15.

Course syllabus

The syllabus contains the formal and legal details of the entire course. It’s a legal document outlining the course structure and requirements, intended mainly for administrative use.

The course literature listed may be updated up to eight weeks before the course begins.

The course is held on campus and cannot be followed remotely. It is a part-time course, which corresponds to 20 hours per week, divided between teacher-led instruction, group work, and self-study.

The teaching consists of lectures, exercises, and a mandatory seminar. If you miss a mandatory session, you will need to complete a written assignment instead. The examination consists of a written analysis task and a take-home exam.

After the course, you will have a deeper understanding of language learning and language processes, which can be useful in many different professions. You can use your knowledge in education, research, or communication, for example.

Selection criteria

Seats are allocated according to the following: The general average (GPA) of your higher secondary school leaving certificate: 34 %, The Swedish national university aptitude test: 34 %, number of previous ECTS at application deadline (up to 165): 32 %. If students have equal credentials, seats are allocated based on their results on The Swedish National University Aptitude Test. If this too is equal, seats are allocated based on a draw.
