Linguistics: Level 2

This course offers an in-depth exploration of central aspects of linguistics. You will learn about phonetics, general linguistics, and the history of linguistics. The goal is for you to be able to assess different linguistic theories and apply them to empirical material.

Course literature

The course literature listed may be updated up to eight weeks before the course begins.

The course is held on campus and cannot be followed remotely. The course is a full-time course, which corresponds to 40 hours per week, divided between teacher-led instruction, group work, and self-study. The teaching consists of lectures, group work, and practical exercises. You will practice formulating research questions and using various methods of analysing linguistic data. The course also provides the opportunity to discuss and compare linguistic literature in a historical context.

After the course, you can continue with further studies in linguistics or seek jobs in areas such as language research, translation, and language technology. The course provides a strong foundation for a career in language science.

Prerequisites

General entry requirements and the student must have taken the level 1 course LINA15 (Linguistics: Level 1, 30 credits) and passed at least 21 credits, in which modules 1 Linguistics: Human Language and 2 Phonetics: Level 1 must be included, or the equivalent.

Seats are allocated according to the following: The general average (GPA) of your higher secondary school leaving certificate: 34 %, The Swedish national university aptitude test: 34 %, number of previous ECTS at the application deadline (up to 165): 32 %.
