Linguistics: Speech Acoustics, Perception and Prosody

In this course, we delve into the central aspects of phonetics. You will learn about the acoustics of speech and how it relates to how we produce and perceive speech. You will gain practical experience in creating and interpreting acoustic representations. You will also connect phonetic theory to the history of phonetics and compare different approaches using selected literature. Additionally, you will discuss and apply basic statistical methods. The course is relevant for you who want to understand both the segmental and prosodic features of spoken language.

The course is held on campus and cannot be followed remotely. The course is a part-time course, which corresponds to 20 hours per week, divided between teacher-led instruction, group work, and self-study. The teaching consists of lectures, laboratory work, and exercises.

After the course, you will have a strong foundation in phonetics, which can be used in further studies or professional roles in linguistics, speech therapy, voice technology, and much more.

Entry requirements

General entry requirements and LINA14 Linguistics: Level 1, 30 ECTS (or LINB21 Linguistics: Human Language - Structure and Application, 15 ECTS, and LINB22 Linguistics: Human Language - Process and Diversity, 15 ECTS), or 60 credits in a language subject including basic knowledge of phonetics in accordance with LINB22, or the equivalent.

Selection criteria

Seats are allocated according to the following: The general average (GPA) of your higher secondary school leaving certificate: 34 %, The Swedish national university aptitude test: 34 %, number of previous ECTS at the application deadline (up to 165): 32 %.
