Literature-Culture-Media: Nineteenth-Century Writing in English

You will learn about the main literary genres of the 19th century and how they reflect different readerships. You will study works by several prominent authors and analyse their texts in detail.

During the course, you will read between 2,500 and 3,000 pages of English literary texts from the 19th century. We study these works both as individual texts and as parts of a larger literary tradition. You will also read scholarly material that helps you understand and analyse the literary texts.

This course is part of the Master's programme in Literature – Culture – Media, but it can also be taken as a standalone course.

Course literature

The course literature listed may be updated up to eight weeks before the course begins.

The teaching is conducted through lectures and seminars. You are expected to participate actively and attend at least 80% of the sessions. If you miss a compulsory session due to illness or similar reasons, there will be an opportunity for make-up work.

After completing the course, you will have a deeper understanding of 19th-century literature and its context. This can open doors to further studies or careers in literary studies, teaching, the cultural sector, and many other fields.

Entry requirements

To be eligible for the course requires the successful completion of 90 higher education credits in English, or the equivalent.
