This course offers a deep understanding of Yiddish modernism – a literary movement that emerged in Europe and the United States during the first half of the 20th century. You’ll read and analyse key works by Yiddish-speaking authors and explore how their texts relate to broader modernist trends.

You’ll learn how literature addresses questions of Jewish identity, culture, and society, and how writers used poetry, prose, and theatre to express both resistance and renewal. The course also equips you with tools to interpret and analyse texts using established methods and reference materials.

The course is primarily based on reading, but includes both written and oral assignments. Four skill-based components are mandatory and help you build your knowledge step by step.

This course gives you insight into how Yiddish modernism shaped Jewish culture in Eastern and Central Europe and the United States – and how it continues to influence our understanding of modernism’s diversity.

The course is included as an elective course in the Master's (120 credits) programme Literature – Culture – Media. It is also offered as a freestanding course and can be included in a first or second cycle degree.
