The course provides in-depth knowledge of statistical inference theory – the foundation for analyzing data and drawing conclusions using mathematical methods. You will learn about estimators, decision theory, and how different inference methods are connected. Topics include exponential families, Bayesian inference, minimax estimators, and hypothesis testing. You will gain insight into why there is rarely a single optimal solution and how to manage this through various strategies.
The course can be taken as an elective in other bachelor’s programmes. In addition, it is offered as a standalone course. Teaching is in English, and the course is given at the Centre for Mathematical Sciences.
To be admitted, you need at least 60 credits in mathematics, including an introductory course in mathematical statistics.
The studies consist of lectures and exercises. Exercises are not mandatory but strongly recommended, as they involve active participation, discussions, and problem-solving. You are expected to prepare before class to get the most out of the course.
Assessment is through a written and oral exam at the end of the course. The final grade is based on a combination of these parts.
Prerequisites
For admission to the course, general entry requirements and 60 credits of studies in mathematics including knowledge equivalent to the course MASA03 Mathematical statistics: Basic course, 15 ECTS. English course 6/B.
