You will be introduced to the subject of Media History and learn how to analyse and interpret media content, form and use from a historical perspective. You will also explore cultural, social and technological aspects of how war can be depicted.
You will study different types of media in the context of armed conflicts – past and present – and learn how to relate them to cultural, social and technological change. You will practise identifying different media expressions, both orally and in writing, and train your ability to critically assess media from a scholarly perspective.

Course literature SASH67 (PDF, New tab)The course is taught in English at the Department of History. The teaching includes lectures, seminars and group exercises, both in the classroom and on a digital platform. You will work independently, reading academic texts and writing assignments. You will also work in groups to analyse photos and films and then present your conclusions on how conflicts are portrayed in the media.
This course is a part-time course given once a year, in the autumn term (daytime). The course is a stand-alone course for beginners. It can be included in a first or second-cycle degree.
Exchange students are given priority in admission.

Selection criteria
Seats are allocated according to the following: The general average (GPA) of your higher secondary school leaving certificate: 34 %, The Swedish national university aptitude test: 34 %, number of previous ECTS at application deadline (up to 165): 32 %. If students have equal credentials, seats are allocated based on their results on The Swedish National University Aptitude Test. If this too is equal, seats are allocated based on a draw.

are required to pay tuition fees. You pay an instalment of the tuition fee in advance of each
semester.
