The course offers an introduction to the political and social development of the Middle East from the early 20th century to the present day. By applying social science theories and current research, you will gain the tools needed to understand the region's complexity and ongoing changes. You will explore how social structures have emerged locally, regionally, and globally.  

Throughout the course, you will learn about current events within a historical and theoretical framework, discuss various perspectives on societal development, and formulate your own questions about contemporary issues. You will also enhance your ability to critically evaluate, present, and discuss different explanations and narratives about the region. Teaching consists of lectures and seminars.

Prerequisites

A Bachelor's degree equivalent to 180 credits. Oral and written language skills in English corresponding to English 6/B from a Swedish upper secondary school is a requirement. Recognition of qualifications is based on national guidelines.
