The Master’s degree project is the final course in your programme, giving you the chance to apply what you have learned throughout your molecular biology studies. It often plays a crucial role in shaping your future career.
At Lund University, you can specialise in Immunology and Infection Biology, Microbiology and Biotechnology, or Molecular Genetics and Biotechnology. You may choose a project worth 30, 45 or 60 credits, corresponding to 20, 30 or 40 weeks of full-time work.
Your project will be carried out within a research group - either at Lund University, another university, or in industry. You are responsible for finding a suitable placement. The project will be part of ongoing research at your host institution.
This is your opportunity to dive deep into a subject that interests you. You will work independently and strengthen your skills in project planning, literature review, data management, scientific writing, and presentation.
The project involves hands-on work in a research group. Together with your supervisor, you will create a project plan, which must be approved by your programme coordinator before you begin.
To be eligible, you need to be enrolled in one of our Master’s programmes in Molecular Biology and have completed 45 credits of relevant advanced courses in molecular biology at Lund University.
Throughout the project, you’ll keep a detailed lab notebook, documenting experimental design, technical procedures, raw data, calculations, results, and conclusions. This practice is essential for writing your final report and learning proper scientific documentation.
At the halfway point, you will complete a self-assessment with your supervisor to evaluate progress and ensure the project is on track.
You will present your work in a written report and an oral presentation, followed by a discussion where you will answer questions about your project. The examination committee - comprising an examiner, an external reviewer (usually an expert in the field), and your supervisor - will then deliberate before the examiner assigns a final grade.
Prerequisites
45 credits at advanced level in molecular biology of relevance for the degree project and a Bachelor's degree (180 credits). English 6 / B.
