This course gives you the opportunity to dive deep into a specialized area of numerical analysis and explore current research in the field. You will develop your ability to read, understand, and critically evaluate scientific literature while also learning to communicate complex ideas clearly and effectively to a broader audience.
The course places particular emphasis on independent literature studies, scientific communication in both written and oral form, and the process of peer review. You will work within the fields of numerical analysis and scientific computing, selecting a topic that aligns with your interests and academic goals.
The course is compulsory for the specialization in numerical analysis within the Master’s Programme in Mathematics. It is also available as a standalone course.
Teaching is centered around seminars and independent study. You will select a topic within numerical analysis, read and analyse current research literature, and present your findings in a written report and an oral presentation. In addition, you will review another student’s work and provide constructive feedback as part of the academic peerreview process.
All seminars are mandatory, and the learning environment encourages critical reflection, clear communication, and active engagement with both your own work and that of your peers. The course consists of a written report corresponding to 4.0 credits, an oral presentation worth 3.0 credits, and a peerreview component worth 0.5 credits.
Assessment is based on your written report, your oral presentation, and your peer review of another student’s work.
This course provides direct preparation for your master’s thesis in numerical analysis and strengthens essential skills in scientific communication and critical reading of research literature—competencies that are highly valuable in both academic and professional environments. After completing the course, you will be well equipped for advanced studies in numerical analysis or scientific computing, as well as for roles that require analytical thinking and the ability to communicate complex technical ideas, such as positions in data science, engineering, or software development.
Entry requirements
For admission to the course, English 6 / B and 90 higher education credits in mathematics and numerical analysis are required, including knowledge equivalent to the course NUMA41 Numerical analysis: Basic course, 7.5 credits
