This course is relevant for those who want to understand the building blocks of language and how they are used in different languages. During the course, you will develop a fundamental understanding of how sound systems function in human languages. You will learn about sound categorization, lexical contrast, and how sounds can be combined. You will analyse sound data from different languages, learn both traditional and modern phonological theory, and explore examples from many different languages to see how sound structures work.

The teaching consists of lectures and mandatory exercises, including laboratory work.

The course is offered on campus and cannot be followed remotely. It is a part-time course, which corresponds to 20 hours per week, divided between teacher-led instruction, group work, and self-study. 

The course is mandatory for the specializations General Linguistics and Phonetics in the Master's programme in Language and Linguistics. It is also offered as a standalone course and can be included in a general degree at both undergraduate and advanced levels.

After the course, you can continue studying linguistics or work with language-related issues. Knowledge in phonology is valuable in areas such as language teaching, linguistics, and speech technology.

The course has extended their application deadline. All late applications are prioritised by the date that they are received. Only applicants who are qualified with a completed application will be considered.

Prerequisites

To be eligible for the course requires the successful completion of 90 higher education credits, of which at least 60 credits are from within a language discipline or Linguistics (General Linguistics or Phonetics), or the equivalent.

Selection criteria

Seats are allocated according to: ECTS (HPAV): 100 %.
