Application dates

In this course you will gain foundational knowledge about the Earth and the processes that shape our environment, and learn how this knowledge can be applied in research and society. 

The course provides you with a broad understanding of planet Earth and the interconnected processes that govern how landscapes and habitats change over time. You will be introduced to the composition and processes of the atmosphere, lithosphere, hydrosphere, and biosphere, as well as how the different spheres and the processes linking them are related to current environmental issues. The course is ideal for those who want to contribute to solutions for today’s environmental challenges.

The course covers the following topics:

  • Mineralogy, Petrology, and Soil Science
  • Geomorphology (landform science) and landscape changes across time and space
  • Meteorological, climatological, hydrological, and oceanographic processes
  • Ecosystem Science: The interaction between living organisms and their environment
  • Remote Sensing and GIS
  • Written communication (theory and practice) and library skills

Teaching consists of lectures, mandatory seminars, exercises, fieldwork, excursions, and project work. Assessment includes assignments and project presentations throughout the course, as well as a written exam at the end of the course.

General requirements and studies equivalent to Swedish Upper Secondary School courses Mathematics 2a or 2b or 2c/Mathematics level 2a or level 2b or level 2c, and Science studies 2/Science studies level 2

Selection criteria

Seats are allocated according to the following: The general average (GPA) of your higher secondary school leaving certificate: 34 %, The Swedish national university aptitude test: 34 %, number of previous ECTS at application deadline (up to 165): 32 %. If students have equal credentials, seats are allocated based on their results on The Swedish National University Aptitude Test. If this too is equal, seats are allocated based on a draw.
