This course provides in-depth knowledge of electromagnetism and its applications. You will study Maxwell’s equations, electromagnetic potentials, gauge choices, waveguides, impedance, dispersion, and radiation from charges and antennas.
Topics include retarded potentials, multipole radiation, and Liénard–Wiechert potentials, as well as an introduction to the relativistic formulation of electromagnetism. Synchrotron radiation and Kramers–Kronig relations are also covered.
The course is ideal for students who want to understand the role of electromagnetism in modern physics and technology and be able to use the theory to analyse complex systems.
Teaching consists of lectures, group exercises, assignments, and a project with a workshop. You will practise solving problems, interpreting fields and potentials, and presenting project results both orally and in writing.
Assessment is based on an oral exam and project presentation. Assignments and participation in the workshop are mandatory. The final grade is based on both the exam and the project.
Entry requirements
90 hp in Physics and 45 hp in Mathematics, or a Bachelor's degree in Physics. In both cases this should include knowledge corresponding to the course FYTB13 Electromagnetism 7.5 hp. English 6/B.
