Experimental Biophysics is an interdisciplinary course that introduces you to the interface between modern physics, nanotechnology and biology. You will explore topics such as micro- and nanofluidics, single-molecule detection, advanced imaging techniques, and how biological systems interact with nanostructured surfaces.
The course also covers system-level approaches such as lab-on-a-chip and methods for interfacing with the nervous system. Teaching is based on current scientific articles and trains you to read, analyse and discuss research findings effectively.
The course can be taken as part of a degree programme in physics or astrophysics, or as a stand-alone course. It is taught in English and is aimed at students with a bachelor’s degree in physics or equivalent who want to deepen their understanding of experimental methods in biophysics.
The course consists of three parts: theory, laboratory sessions and a project. The theory module includes lectures and seminars where you discuss current research articles and practise extracting relevant information.
Laboratory sessions take place in active research environments and give you hands-on experience with techniques such as fluorescence microscopy, optical tweezers, total internal reflection and microfluidics. In the project module, you work individually or in small groups to plan and carry out your own experiment – preferably innovative yet simple – in a scientific setting either within or outside the university.
Assessment includes written assignments, an oral exam for the lab component, and a written project report. The course is taught jointly with a corresponding course at LTH and follows their examination schedule.
Entry requirements
Admission to the course requires 120 credits scientific or technical studies, or a scientific or Degree of Bachelor of Science - in both cases including knowledge equivalent to at least the Physics of the upper-secondary school 2/B and English 6/B.
