This master-level theoretical physics course provides an in-depth look at Einstein's theory of general relativity. You will learn about the mathematics required to understand the theory and its applications in physics and astronomy. Topics include special relativity, tensors in Minkowski space and curved spacetime, Einstein's field equations, black holes, gravitational radiation and cosmology.
The course can be part of a programme in physics or astrophysics, or taken as a stand-alone course.
Studies consist of lectures and exercises. You will gain a deep understanding of the geometry and dynamics of spacetime by studying special relativity, tensors and Einstein's field equations. The course also includes studies of black holes, gravitational waves and cosmology.
Examination is through written assignments, oral seminar assignments and an oral exam.
Entry requirements
Admission to the course requires 75 credits in physics and 45 credits in mathematics, or a bachelor's degree in physics or equivalent. General entry requirements and English 6/B.

Seats are allocated according to: ECTS (HPAV): 100 %.
