In this course, you will gain a thorough understanding of the physics behind lasers – from light–matter interaction to optical cavities and laser amplifiers. You will learn how different types of lasers work, how they generate light, and how they are applied in science and technology.

The course combines theoretical knowledge with hands-on experience and equips you to analyse, evaluate, and apply laser technology in various contexts. You will also learn how to choose the right laser for a specific application, such as materials processing, communication, or medicine.

The course can be part of a master’s programme in physics or astrophysics or taken as a stand-alone course. It is taught in English.

Teaching includes lectures, laboratory sessions, and group exercises. You will work hands-on with optical systems and laser setups, applying theory in real experiments. Laboratory sessions are mandatory and integrated with other course components.

Assessment consists of a written exam lab report, and a project. The exam is graded as Fail, Pass, or Pass with Distinction, while the other components are graded as Fail or Pass. The final grade is based on the exam result. The course is co-taught with a corresponding course at LTH and follows the LTH exam schedule.

Entry requirements

Admission to the course requires 75 credits in physics and 45 credits in mathematics including knowledge equivalent to FYSB24 Physics: Atomic and Molecular Physics, 7.5 credits - or a bachelor's degree in physics or equivalent, including knowledge equivalent to FYSB24 Physics: Atomic and Molecular Physics, 7.5 credits. English 6/B and basic eligibility.

Selection criteria

Seats are allocated according to: ECTS (HPAV): 100 %.

Citizens of countries outside:

  • The European Union (EU)
