The Master’s degree project gives you the opportunity to carry out an independent, scientific project within a clearly defined area of physics. The project corresponds to 30 credits and is chosen together with your supervisor and examiner, allowing you to specialise in a topic that genuinely interests you.

Your project may be experimental or theoretical, depending on your chosen direction. Many projects connect directly to active research within the department, giving you the chance to contribute to real scientific questions. You can also complete your project at a company, an external organisation or another department, either within or beyond the university. If the project is undertaken outside the department, you will still have a supervisor from the university to ensure academic support throughout the work.

The course strengthens your ability to design, plan and carry out a scientific investigation. You will deepen your subject knowledge, develop your analytical skills and learn to navigate complex problems independently. The Master’s degree project prepares you for advanced professional roles or further postgraduate studies and gives you valuable experience of how a research-driven project is conducted from start to finish.

Current project ideas are listed on the course website, but you are also welcome to discuss your own ideas with potential supervisors.

During your project work, you will take full responsibility for a research project while receiving guidance from a supervisor with expertise in your chosen field. You begin by defining a clear research question, reviewing relevant literature and planning how to approach the project in a structured and realistic way.

Your day-to-day work depends on the nature of the project. In an experimental project, you might be developing experimental setups, carrying out measurements or analysing data. In a theoretical project, you may work with models, calculations or simulations. Regardless of the specialisation, you will sharpen your ability to think critically, evaluate results and draw well-grounded conclusions.

As the project progresses, you will compile your findings in a written report and present your work orally. This is your opportunity to demonstrate that you can explain complex physical concepts in a clear and organised way – a skill that is essential whether you intend to pursue a career within research or work in technology-intensive environments.

Your project becomes a defining part of your Master’s degree: a chance to specialise, explore and contribute with new insights to the field of physics.

Not available as a stand-alone course

This course is only available as part of a programme.

Prerequisites

For admission to the course it is required to have knowledge equivalent to English 6/B, a Bachelor's degree in physics and in addition 45 credits of physics at an advanced level including knowledge equivalent to FYSN21, Quantum physics in research and society, 7.5 credits, FYSN17, Quantum mechanics, 7.5 credits and one of the course packages in accordance with the course requirements for a Master of Science in Physics specified in the current program syllabus. In addition, the student must have sufficient knowledge in the subject area of the degree project, which is approved by the examiner before the project begins.
