The course provides a solid foundation in optics. You will learn to analyze and design optical systems within different frameworks, like ray optics, wave optics, Fourier optics and electromagnetic optics.

You will also explore fundamental concepts, like interference, diffraction, anisotropic materials or photonic crystals, and understand their practical implications, e.g. concerning the resolution limit of a microscope or how highly reflecting mirrors are made.

Within the course project, you will gain hands-on experience in simulating and analysing optical systems with the help of a raytracing software. The project trains you to select appropriate optical solutions for different applications and to present your results both orally and in writing.

This course is suitable for students who want to obtain detailed knowledge in optics to support your future career in academia or industry. It can be taken as a stand-alone course or as part of a Master’s programme in physics.

Teaching consists of lectures, laboratory sessions, group exercises, and a ray-tracing project. The laboratory sessions are compulsory and cover interferometry, Fourier optics, and polarisation.

In the project, you will work in a group designing an optical system using simulation tools. You will practice applying your knowledge in a realistic design process.

The assessment is based on a written exam, approved lab reports, and a project presentation. Active participation in all compulsory components is required to pass the course.

Entry requirements

For admission to the course, knowledge is required equivalent 90 credits in natural sciences, including knowledge equivalent to FYSB24, Physics: Atomic and Molecular Physics, 7.5 credits. General entry requirments and English 6/B.

Selection criteria

Seats are allocated according to: ECTS (HPAV): 100 %.

Citizens of countries outside:
