You do not need any prior knowledge of Polish—only general eligibility is required. This course is for you who are interested in modern Polish literature and culture. It is a natural continuation after the course POLA15: Polish Literature and Culture From Middle Ages to Modernism.

In this course, you explore how Polish literature has developed from 1939 to the present day. You study key literary works and place them in their cultural and historical contexts, while also relating them to important literary and intellectual traditions.

The course trains you to discuss and interpret texts both orally and in writing, and to form independent and critical viewpoints on different interpretations and ethical questions raised in the works. These perspectives are then connected to contemporary issues and debates.

Course literature

The course literature listed may be updated up to eight weeks before the course begins.

The course is taught in English, and runs at 33% pace, which corresponds to ca 13 hours per week, divided between teacher-led instruction and independent study. The teaching consists of online lectures and seminars.

The course is offered online via Zoom and Canvas and uses interactive information technology. Students are expected to participate in this way, and to have access to a computer with Internet connection, camera and microphone.

The course is examined through three written home assignments on Canvas, linked to follow-up seminars on Zoom.

We recommend you combine literature studies with language studies or area studies. You can take Polish beginner’ courses 1 and 2 (POLB10, POLB20) online or take courses in Central and Eastern European Studies (ÖCKB06, ÖCKB07) that are given on campus in Lund.
