Political Science: Bachelor's Thesis in Development Studies

Please note: This is the compulsory bachelor’s thesis course for students in the Bachelor’s Programme in Development Studies (BIDS) majoring in Political Science.

The course builds on your previous studies in political science and international development, giving you the opportunity to apply your knowledge in an independent research project. Each student pair is assigned a supervisor who provides feedback throughout the process.

Teaching includes planning and examination seminars, lectures on information search, and supervision in pairs. Participation in seminars is compulsory.

To pass the course, you must:

• Defend your own thesis at a seminar.
• Act as discussant on another thesis and submit a written review.

Theses are normally written in pairs, but students may apply to write individually if there are special reasons.

After completing the course, you will be able to:

• Design and carry out an independent research study on political aspects of development.
• Apply political science methods and understand how they shape research outcomes.
• Critically review and discuss research results, both orally and in writing.
• Analyse societal conditions from scientific and ethical perspectives.
• Contribute to constructive discussions in seminars and group settings.

Entry requirements

General and knowledge corresponding to 90 ECTS credits from the Bachelor prorgamme in Development Studies (SGUTV), of which at least 45 credits of first year courses and 45 credits of second year courses (including STVC02 Political Science: The Politics of Development, 15 credits, and STVC05 Political Science: International Political Economy and Development, 15 credits)

Selection criteria

Seats are allocated according to: The general average (GPA) of your higher secondary school leaving certificate: 20 %, The Swedish national university aptitude test: 10 %, number of previous ECTS at application deadline (up to 165): 70 %.

Citizens of countries outside:

are required to pay tuition fees. You pay an instalment of the tuition fee in advance of each
semester.
