Political Science: European Governance

This course provides an advanced understanding of the European Union’s political system and decision-making processes. You will explore how power is exercised, negotiated, and organised within the EU, for instance, through institutional interactions and member-state influence.

The course covers four main themes:

1. The development of European integration and its driving forces
2. Decision-making within the executive, legislative, and judicial spheres
3. The EU as a negotiation arena
4. The EU as an administrative system.

Through theoretical perspectives, current research, and practical exercises such as a negotiation simulation, you will develop the ability to analyse how European governance operates in practice.

Course literature

The course literature listed may be updated up to eight weeks before the course begins.

Teaching consists of lectures, seminars, independent study, and a negotiation simulation. Participation in seminars and the negotiation exercise is mandatory.

Assessment is based on an individual course paper, a written analysis of the negotiation exercise, and active participation. The course is taught in English and includes both oral and written components.

The course prepares you for advanced university studies and professional work in organisations dealing with European politics and governance – at local, national, or international levels. It also provides a strong foundation for doctoral studies in political science and European politics.

Prerequisites

150 credits in fully completed courses of which 90 credits including a Bachelor´s degree essay is in Political Science or Peace and Conflict Studies. English course 6/B (advanced proficiency).

Seats are allocated according to: ECTS (HPAV): 100 %.
