Political Science: Political Science Methodology

The course is offered in English as a Master’s level course in political science during the autumn semester. Through lectures, seminars, and practical workshops, you will gain deepened knowledge of research methods, their uses, and their relevance for contemporary research problems.

Course syllabus

Course literature

Introduction to research design: The course begins with an introduction to research design. We will cover both qualitative and quantitative research methods and their uses, with a focus on validity. You will study an assigned political science problem and apply your knowledge and skills to this problem throughout the course.

Workshops and practical exercises: In workshops, you will learn techniques for collecting and analysing data from interviews, surveys, observations, and databases. You read and reflect on the relevant course literature before lectures to be prepared for discussions and workshops.

Written and oral dissemination of results: The course develops skills for both written and oral dissemination of results.

Assessment is based on:

1. a written and oral presentation of an assigned research problem
2. practical and written workshop assignments
3. active participation in the course as a whole.

After completing the course, you will have deepened your knowledge and skills in political science methodology. This opens up career opportunities in research, international organisations, and public administration. The course also provides a solid foundation for further studies at an advanced level.

Entry requirements

150 ECTS credits in fully completed courses of which 90 credits, including a bachelor's degree essay, in Political Science or Peace and Conflict Studies (or an equivalent discipline). English course 6/B (adv proficiency).
