Psychology: Personality- and Development Psychology

The course provides you with knowledge about how we humans develop throughout life – biologically, emotionally, socially and cognitively.

The course also covers how our immediate environment and the surrounding society influence our personality and development from childhood to old age and how we deal with stress through different stages of life.

Please note that the course is taught in Swedish during the spring semester and in English during the autumn semester.

Course syllabus

Course literature

The course literature listed may be updated up to eight weeks before the course begins.

You will learn about personality theories that help you understand why we humans think, feel and behave differently.

Teaching consists of lectures, seminars and exercises. Some compulsory elements require you to be physically present in order to get the most out of the course. During these components, you will participate in group exercises where you and your fellow students will analyse and discuss personality and developmental psychology issues together.

The course is examined through written and oral tests and participation in seminars.

The course consists of four modules:

1. Child Psychology (7.5 credits):
   How children develop socially, emotionally and cognitively.
2. Adolescent Psychology (7.5 credits):
   How young people develop biologically and psychologically and gradually strengthen their ability to be independent.
3. Personality Psychology (7.5 credits):
   Why people behave differently and are motivated by different things.
4. Adult Development (7.5 credits):
   What happens in terms of personality and how do people develop as they reach older ages?

After the course, you will have a greater understanding of your own and others' development and personality. You will be familiar with how this knowledge is important for society to be able to design healthcare, schools and workplaces that are adapted to people with different needs and characteristics.

You will be well prepared for further studies in psychology or related fields, and your knowledge will also be useful in professions in healthcare, education, social work or HR.

Entry requirements

General requirements and studies equivalent to Swedish Upper Secondary School course Social Studies 1b or 1a1+1a2/Social Studies level 1b or level 1a2

Selection criteria

Seats are allocated according to the following: The general average (GPA) of your higher secondary school leaving certificate: 34 %, The Swedish national university aptitude test: 34 %, number of previous ECTS at application deadline (up to 165): 32 %. If students have equal credentials, seats are allocated based on their results on The Swedish National University Aptitude Test. If this too is equal, seats are allocated based on a draw.

Tuition fees for non-EU/EEA citizens

Citizens of countries outside:

• The European Union (EU)
• The European Economic Area (EEA) and
• Switzerland

are required to pay tuition fees. You pay an instalment of the tuition fee in advance of each
semester.
