How do we know that something is true in science? In this course, you will explore how researchers formulate hypotheses, test them, and draw conclusions—using the scientific method.

The course covers basic questions about what constitutes science and the scientific method; how does true science differ from pseudoscience, charlatanism and fraud; the relationship between faith and reason, religion and science; anthropocentricity and gender perspectives in science; and the connection between natural science and other creative activities such as art and music.

Teaching consists of lectures, seminars, and group discussions. You will work both individually and in groups to explore what philosophers have said a bout the scientific method and how active researchers us it in practice. Through discussions and reflections, you will develop your understanding of science and its place in society.

The examination consists of written assignments and oral presentations in which you demonstrate your ability to analyse and discuss issues from a scientific perspective.

General requirements for university studies in Sweden

Selection criteria

Seats are allocated according to the following: The general average (GPA) of your higher secondary school leaving certificate: 34 %, The Swedish national university aptitude test: 34 %, number of previous ECTS at application deadline (up to 165): 32 %. If students have equal credentials, seats are allocated based on their results on The Swedish National University Aptitude Test. If this too is equal, seats are allocated based on a draw.
