The course provides you with analytical tools that improve your ability to explore and explain social policy models. You will discuss interventions from both bottom-up and top-down perspectives. Special emphasis is placed on theoretical discussions regarding the various ways social policy addresses social change at different levels – European, national, and local.
The course consists of two main components: one focusing on theory and the other on ongoing transformations in contemporary welfare societies. During the course, you will study themes such as:
- Labour market and employment
- Inequality
- Poverty and social exclusion
- Sustainable welfare and eco-social policy
The course is conducted in English and is an independent course within the main field of social work. It is included as an elective course in the social work programme and can also be part of a Master's degree in social work.

The Social Policy in Europe course provides deeper insight into the evolving processes within social policy. You will be equipped to critically analyze and reflect on various social policy theories, applying them in professional contexts in Sweden and Europe – as a researcher, politician, or social worker.
Prerequisites
A Bachelor's degree (180 credits) in Social Work, or at least 90 ECTS credits in Social Work (or the equivalent). English course 6/B (advanced proficiency)

Seats are allocated according to: ECTS (HPAV): 100 %.
Tuition fees for non-EU/EEA citizens
Citizens of countries outside:
- The European Union (EU)
- The European Economic Area (EEA) and
- Switzerland
are required to pay tuition fees. You pay an instalment of the tuition fee in advance of each
semester.
