In this course, you will learn how to construct graphs and visualisations according to the theory Grammar of Graphics. You will also learn how to create visualisations yourself using the software R and its package ggplot2. A central part of creating visualisations is making choices. Through the choices you make, your visualisation will be more or less intelligible and also highlight different aspects of the data. An important element of the course is therefore to review visualisations by other course participants.
Topics covered in the course include:
- introduction to R and ggplot2
- choice of colour, symbols, scales, and perspective (2D, 3D)
- summation and abstraction (many observations)
- interactive visualisations
- maps and spatial data
- visualisation of statistical models.

You'll take charge of your own learning by studying the course literature, supported by online resources including recorded video lectures. You will independently complete exercises involving the creation of various visualisations using R. Assessment is based on a series of written assignments in which you present and justify the visualisations you have produced. A key component of the course peer reviewing, where you review visualisations created by fellow participants and respond constructively to their feedback on your visualisation.
The ability to create high-quality charts and visualisations will benefit you in almost every profession.
Entry requirements
General eligibility and knowledge corresponding to STAA41 Statistics: Basic course 1, 15 ECTS credits, or STAA36 Statistics: Fundamentals of Business Analytics, 7,5 ECTS credits.
Selection criteria
Seats are allocated according to the following: The general average (GPA) of your higher secondary school leaving certificate: 34 %, The Swedish national university aptitude test: 34 %, number of previous ECTS at the application deadline (up to 165): 32 %.
