This beginner-level course in Swedish as a foreign language (7.5 credits) helps you build your skills in speaking, writing, and understanding Swedish. It’s designed for international students who want to continue learning Swedish in a supportive and structured way.
The course follows the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) and aims to help you reach level A2. You’ll study vocabulary, pronunciation, grammar, and sentence structure, and practise reading, writing, and speaking.
Please note: this is a freestanding course and cannot be included in a degree at Lund University if you already meet the Swedish language requirement for university admission.

Course literature SVEH12 (PDF, New tab)This is a distance course taught online using Canvas and Zoom. You’ll need a computer with a stable internet connection, webcam, speakers, and a microphone.
The course runs at 25% pace, which means you should plan to spend around 10 hours per week on lectures, assignments, and self-study. The workload is similar to other university courses.
You’ll complete a supervised online exam at the end of the course.

Prerequisites
To be admitted to the course, students must meet the general entry requirements for higher education in Sweden (with the exception of proficiency in Swedish) and have knowledge equivalent to SVEH11 Swedish for Students with a Foreign Background: Level 1, 7.5 credits
Selection criteria
Seats are allocated according to the following: The general average (GPA) of your higher secondary school leaving certificate: 34 %, The Swedish national university aptitude test: 34 %, number of previous ECTS at application deadline (up to 165): 32 %. If students have equal credentials, seats are allocated based on their results on The Swedish National University Aptitude Test. If this too is equal, seats are allocated based on a draw.
Tuition fees for non-EU/EEA citizens
Citizens of countries outside:
- The European Union (EU)
- The European Economic Area (EEA) and
- Switzerland
are required to pay tuition fees. You pay an instalment of the tuition fee in advance of each
semester.
