Companies are key players in today’s society, but their existence and structure are far from self-evident. In this course, you’ll explore the company as a phenomenon – historically, economically and socially. You’ll learn theories that explain why companies emerge, how they grow or disappear and why their structures differ across countries and over time.
The course gives you knowledge about the development of companies from antiquity to the present, with a particular focus on Europe and the United States. You’ll gain insight into how institutions such as laws, regulations and norms influence companies’ opportunities and limitations.
You’ll practice analysing and presenting complex relationships, both in writing and orally. This course is for you who want to understand how companies operate in context – and how they shape the world we live in.
During the course, you’ll work to understand the role of companies in society, both historically and today. You’ll take part in lectures and group exercises where you discuss theories about firms, growth, entrepreneurship and institutions.
You’ll learn to analyse how companies are influenced by and influence societal development – economically, politically and culturally. You’ll also practice counterfactual thinking, imagining how history could have unfolded differently.
Assessment consists of a group case study presented in a seminar, and an individual written assignment. You’ll be evaluated based on your ability to analyse, reason, and present your conclusions. The course equips you to understand companies in a broader context – and to think critically about their role in society.
