Application dates

This course will give you a deeper understanding of statistical mechanics and its applications. You will learn about the sum of states, Gibbs entropy and free energy, and distributions such as Fermi-Dirac, Bose-Einstein and Planck. The course also covers the Ising model, phase transitions and critical phenomena, including critical exponents. Furthermore, the transfer matrix method, mean field theory and renormalisation theory are introduced.

The course can be included in a programme in physics or astrophysics, or taken as a stand-alone course.

The studies in this course consist of lectures and exercises. The lectures provide you with theoretical knowledge, while the exercises allow you to apply the theory in practice.

Examination takes place through written assignments, oral seminar assignments and a written exam. To pass the course, you must pass the assignments, seminar papers and written exam.
