This course provides you with a basic understanding of the Standard Model of particle physics and its extensions. You will study the building blocks of the Standard Model, including quarks, leptons, and gauge bosons, as well as the fundamental principles of strong and electroweak interactions. The course also covers CP violation, neutrino oscillations, and how these phenomena can be observed experimentally. Furthermore, you will receive an introduction to supersymmetry and grand unified theories.
The course can be included in a program in physics or astrophysics or studied as a stand-alone course.
The studies consist of lectures and calculation exercises. You will work on written assignments during the course, which will help you to continuously apply and deepen your knowledge.
Normally, a week is scheduled with two lectures on Mondays and Wednesdays, and one exercise session on Fridays. The schedule is adapted to other course schedules within the same field.
The course is examined through six sets of exercises, a written exam and two oral exams. The written exam is generally held in the beginning of January and is followed by two oral exams, one for the theory part and one for the phenomenology part.
The course is designed to provide you with both theoretical knowledge and practical skills that are valuable for further studies and research in particle physics.
Entry requirements
90 credits in Physics and 45 credits in Mathematics or a Bachelor of Science in Physics, in both cases including knowledge corresponding to FYTB14 Classical mechanics and special relativity, 7.5 credits. English 6/English course B. Knowledge corresponding to FYSC14 Particle Physics, Cosmology and Accelerators, 7.5 credits is recommended.
