Ukrainian: Beginners' Course I

This course is intended for beginners in Ukrainian.

In this course you will be introduced to the Ukrainian alphabet and sound system, and develop foundational skills in reading, pronunciation, and basic grammar. Through simple texts and dialogues, you will build essential communicative abilities in Ukrainian and gain familiarity with elementary grammatical structures.

The course consists of basic grammar, which is applied in speech and writing. It focuses on the way Ukrainian is spoken in everyday situations, with clear pronunciation for good comprehension. You will also review, discuss, and critically reflect on language norms.

The syllabus contains the formal and legal details of the entire course. It’s a legal document outlining the course structure and requirements, intended mainly for administrative use.

Course literature

The course literature listed may be updated up to eight weeks before the course begins.

The course is taught in English online via Zoom and Canvas. It runs at 50% pace, which corresponds to 20 hours per week, divided between teacher-led instruction and independent study.

The teaching includes lectures and lessons on Zoom, in the afternoons, along with practical exercises and six mandatory written assignments.

The course focuses on simplified dialogues and texts in Ukrainian, using basic vocabulary and grammar structures. It also includes simple writing exercises for everyday situations. Ukrainian pronunciation and speaking skills are practiced through listening, pronunciation, and conversation exercises.

The course consists of two modules:

1. Ukrainian: Beginners' Course 1A, 7.5 credits
2. Ukrainian: Beginners' Course 1B, 7.5 credits

The assessment includes two written home exams on Canvas and two oral exams on Zoom.

After completing this course, you will be eligible to continue with Beginner’s Course II in Ukrainian. The course can, for example, be included as an elective in a bachelor’s degree with a language focus.

Seats are allocated according to the following: The general average (GPA) of your higher secondary school leaving certificate: 34 %, The Swedish national university aptitude test: 34 %, number of previous ECTS at application deadline (up to 165): 32 %. If students have equal credentials, seats are allocated based on their results on The Swedish National University Aptitude Test. If this too is equal, seats are allocated based on a draw.

Tuition fees for non-EU/EEA citizens

Citizens of countries outside:

• Switzerland

are required to pay tuition fees. You pay an instalment of the tuition fee in advance of each
semester.
