Yiddish Grammar in Focus

Through practical exercises, you will develop your ability to construct correct and varied sentences in Yiddish. You will also practice writing on different topics and collaborate with others to strengthen your grammatical skills.

The course also includes theoretical and contrastive comparisons between Yiddish and Swedish or English. You will analyse and discuss both historical and contemporary texts to gain a deeper understanding of Yiddish grammatical structures.

Course syllabus

The syllabus contains the formal and legal details of the entire course. It’s a legal document outlining the course structure and requirements, intended mainly for administrative use.

Course literature

The course literature listed may be updated up to eight weeks before the course begins.

The teaching consists of lectures, seminars and practical sessions. The course is examined through both written and oral examinations.

The course is often offered remotely. When this is the case, you will have support through the online learning platform Canvas. The course includes in this case regular lessons via Zoom. These lessons are not recorded. You will need access to a computer with an internet connection, a webcam, and a headset throughout the entire course period.

By studying Yiddish, you gain access to a rich cultural heritage and a wide range of texts that have yet to be translated or explored. It’s an opportunity to work with unique material and develop your language skills.

Yiddish courses also offer teachers the opportunity to qualify for teaching Yiddish as an optional heritage language in primary schools.

General eligibility and knowledge corresponding to YIDD12, Yiddish: Language and Literature, Level 1 B, 15 credits.

Selection criteria

Seats are allocated according to: The general average (GPA) of your higher secondary school leaving certificate: 20 %, The Swedish national university aptitude test: 10 %, number of previous ECTS at application deadline (up to 165): 70 %.

are required to pay tuition fees. You pay an instalment of the tuition fee in advance of each
semester.
