In this first of two introductory courses in Yiddish, you build on what you learned at the beginner level. You deepen your knowledge of morphology, syntax, and vocabulary. Your oral and written language skills improve, while you explore the social and cultural contexts relevant to Yiddish language use.

The teaching consists of lectures, group exercises and seminars. You will practise listening comprehension, written and oral communication, as well as translating texts and video material. The course is assessed through both written and oral examinations.

The course is offered remotely. You will have support through the online learning platform Canvas. The course includes regular lessons via Zoom. These lessons are not recorded. You will need access to a computer with an internet connection, a webcam, and a headset throughout the entire course period.

After completing the course, you will be eligible to continue with Yiddish: Level 1B.

Do you want to deepen your understanding of Yiddish culture or work with language and research? By studying Yiddish, you gain access to a rich cultural heritage and a wide range of texts that have yet to be translated or explored. It’s an opportunity to work with unique material and develop your language skills.

Yiddish courses also offer teachers the opportunity to qualify for teaching Yiddish as an optional heritage language in primary schools.

General eligibility and knowledge corresponding to YIDB02 Yiddish: Language and Literature, 15 ECTS credits.

Selection criteria

Seats are allocated according to the following: The general average (GPA) of your higher secondary school leaving certificate: 34 %, The Swedish national university aptitude test: 34 %, number of previous ECTS at the application deadline (up to 165): 32 %.
