This course is the second of two introductory courses in Yiddish. You will deepen your knowledge, learn how the language is structured, and expand your vocabulary. By reading literary and journalistic materials, you will practice understanding and translating texts into Swedish or English. You will also practice speaking Yiddish fluently about both everyday topics and subjects of cultural relevance, as well as writing with correct grammar. The course gives you tools to analyse language from different perspectives, such as gender, cultural encounters, and diversity. The goal is for you to feel more confident using Yiddish both in speaking and writing..

Course literature YIDD12 (PDF, New tab)The teaching consists of lectures and group exercises. You will practice listening comprehension, written and oral communication, as well as translation of texts and video material. The course is assessed through both written and oral examinations.
The course is offered remotely. You will have support through the online learning platform Canvas. The course includes regular lessons via Zoom. These lessons are not recorded. You will need access to a computer with an internet connection, a webcam, and a headset throughout the entire course period.
After completing the course, you will be eligible to continue with Yiddish: Level 2 A which is part of the progression leading up to a BA in Yiddish.

By studying Yiddish, you gain access to a rich cultural heritage and a wide range of texts that have yet to be translated or explored. It’s an opportunity to work with unique material and develop your language skills.
Yiddish courses also offer teachers the opportunity to qualify for teaching Yiddish as an optional heritage language in primary schools.
Prerequisites
To be admitted to the course, students must have successfully completed YIDD11 Yiddish: Languages and Literature, Level 1A, or the equivalent.
Selection criteria
Seats are allocated according to the following: The general average (GPA) of your higher secondary school leaving certificate: 34 %, The Swedish national university aptitude test: 34 %, number of previous ECTS at the application deadline (up to 165): 32 %.
Tuition fees for non-EU/EEA citizens
Citizens of countries outside:
- The European Union (EU)
- The European Economic Area (EEA) and
- Switzerland
are required to pay tuition fees. You pay an instalment of the tuition fee in advance of each
semester.
