Applying for studies - when to apply

In general, all students wishing to study Bachelor's or Master's level programmes and courses at a Swedish university must apply online using the University Admissions in Sweden website (universityadmissions.se) during the national application periods.

The academic year

The academic year at Lund University is divided into two semesters (autumn and spring), each lasting 20 weeks. The autumn semester begins in August/September and the spring semester begins in January. The academic year runs from late August/early September through until early June, with summer holidays during June, July and August. The majority of the programmes at Lund commence in the autumn semester.

When to apply to Bachelor's and Master's studies

Students applying for international Bachelor's or Master's degree programmes in English have the following application periods:

  • Late October – 15 January for studies starting in the autumn semester (August/September). Note that a few programmes do not open for applications until 1 December.
  • 1 June – 15 August for studies starting in the spring semester (January). Note that only a few programmes start in the spring semester each year.

In general, international students can only apply to Bachelor's or Master's studies at Lund University during these application periods and through the national application system. The dates refer to the deadline to apply online. After this deadline, students usually have another two weeks to get their documents and their application fee (if applicable) to Sweden.

A few programmes may stay open for applications after the normal application deadline. Please read more under "Extended application deadline" below.

Note that some programmes at Lund University, such as Fine Arts and the joint European Master's programmes have different application deadlines. Please see the programme webpages for more information.

Don't miss the deadline!

It is extremely important to apply before the deadline. After the deadline, it will not be possible to apply online at www.universityadmissions.se. If your documents or your application fee arrive after the specified deadline for this (usually around two weeks after the online application deadline) your application will be considered late. Unless the programme or course that you are applying to has an extended deadline (see below under "Extended application deadline"), this means that your application will not be processed or considered.

Extended application deadline

Sometimes the application deadline is extended for a specific programme or course. In these cases you will find the message "open for late application" by the programme/course information on universityadmissions.se. You apply with the usual application steps. As long as this message is showing, it is possible to apply, but late applications are processed in order of date, so it is still important to apply as soon as possible. Please note that if the programme/course does not have an extended deadline, it is not possible to apply late.

The later application round for Swedish residents and EU/EEA students

If you are an EU/EEA citizen (or if you already have a residence permit in Sweden or the EU/EEA) and you have missed the international application round, it may be possible for you to apply to some programmes and courses in the "Swedish student" application rounds (15 March-15 April for studies commencing in autumn; 15 September-15 October for studies commencing in spring). However, please note that most international programmes will not be open for applications in this application round!

In the case that you are able to apply for your programme in the later "Swedish student" application round, you apply at the national application website for Swedish students www.antagning.se. Once you have found the programme there, you can follow the same steps as when you apply in the international application round. Be aware that the admission results from this later round are announced very close to the start of the academic semester, so we still encourage all international students to apply in the earlier round.

Non-EU/EEA citizens will generally not be able to apply in the later application rounds, as you will not be able to get your residence permits in time for the start of the semester.
